This week Cheryl Jackson talks with Jackie DeCarlo, CEO of Manna Food Center, Montgomery County and Josh Singer of DC Parks and Recreation Community Garden Specialist and founding member of the DMV Food Recovery Working Group.  These two amazing organizations have joined forces to share information with community on ways to solve issues of food disparities and ways to prevent food waste in our region.  During the COVID-19 Pandemic, DC Food Recovery Week has provided a number of virtual events for the community.  Make plans to attend by registering at https://dmvfoodrecoveryweek.org  

Monday, Oct. 12, 6:30-7:30pm: Become a Food Preservation Pro: Canning, Freezing, Pickling and Dehydration Methods. Food Recovery Network’s executive director, Regina Anderson, will demonstrate methods for canning, freezing, pickling, and dehydration to save money and food.

Tuesday, Oct. 13, 12:00-1:00pm: How the DMV is Rescuing Food. In this time of pandemic, 30% more people are turning to food banks in our area. Leaders from Food Rescue US, Manna Food Center’s Community Food Rescue, and Prince William Food Rescue will discuss how the region’s food recovery efforts are helping address food insecurity while reducing food waste.

Tuesday, Oct. 13, 6:30-7:30pm: From Leftovers to New Meals – Improvisational Cooking Office Hours. We can all get overwhelmed when confronting a weird mix of veggies in our fridge. In this session, Caroline Howe, DC Food Recovery Working Group, offers tips on how to turn refrigerator leftovers into a new tasty meal.

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 12:00-1:00pm: Alternative Edibles from the Garden. DC Parks and Rec Community Garden Specialist Josh Singer will show you how to maximize your garden harvests and supermarket produce by using the parts of your plants you didn’t realize are not only edible but delicious.

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 8:00-9:00pm. Raising Little Food Waste Warriors. There are easy ways to get kids to be less wasteful and turn them into scrappy food waste warriors in the process! Claudia Fabiano, a DC Food Recovery Working Group board member, and Amanda Stone of the World Wildlife Fund will answer questions and offer tips, tricks, and recipes.

Thursday, Oct. 15, 6:30-7:30pm. Eat or Toss? Using Science to Decode Kitchen Food Waste Dilemmas. Learn what the science says about “questionable-looking” food in this interactive class led by EatorToss.com founder Rachael Jackson. Rachel will talk through several household food waste/food safety dilemmas alongside loads of images and lots of fun facts about food.

Friday, Oct. 16, 12:00-1:00pm. DPR Community Compost Cooperative Training. DC Parks and Rec (DPR)’s Josh will demonstrate how to compost food scraps, mixed with garden waste, in critter- and smell-proof compost bins. This training is open to everyone and will allow DC residents to join any of the 56 compost cooperative sites in DC.

Friday, Oct. 16, 7:30-8:30pm. Nose to Tail and Leaf to Root: A Cooking Class with Chef Mike Rehm. This virtual cooking class with Montgomery County Executive Chef Mike Rehm will demonstrate how to prepare seasonal dishes that maximize taste and minimize waste.

Saturday, Oct. 17, 1:00-2:30pm. Red Wiggler Community Farm Tour. The community is invited to take an in-person tour and learn about the amazing work of Red Wiggler Community Farm, a sustainable farm where people with and without developmental disabilities come together to work, learn, and grow healthy
