Black directors are winning right now! First Ryan Coogler of Fruitvale Station and Creed fame was tapped to direct Marvel’s Black Panther. Now another person of color may take the reins of a huge franchise.

J.J. Abrams, the director of the upcoming film Star Wars:The Force Awakens wants to pass the torch to none other than Ava DuVernay

Here are the details according to Shadow & Act.  “She would just kill it,” Abrams said in a new interview as he complimented her work on “Selma”. He was impressed by how well DuVernay handled that film, calling it “sophisticated and humane.”

“If she could do [Selma] that well, there’s no question that she’d kill this movie,” he added, referencing of course “Star Wars.”

According to IMDB, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in production with a May 26, 2017 release date. While that film is already being directed by Rian Johnson, Disney purchased Lucas Films for a mere $4 billion so there’s no shortage of franchise material for DuVernay to work with in the future.

Congrats Ava!
