6. Harry A. Cole, Judge

Born in Washington and raised in Baltimore, Judge Harry A. Cole (pictured right) went down in history as the first African American to serve on the Maryland Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court. Judge Cole got his start at Morgan State University in 1943 and the University of Maryland Law School in Baltimore in 1949. After serving in the Army in Europe and the Pacific, he came back to the States to become Maryland’s assistant state attorney general in 1953, be elected to the state Senate in 1954, and serve on the Maryland Court of Appeals from 1977 – 1991.
