Earlier this summer, former state Sen. Wendy Davis and others from the Biden campaign filed a lawsuit against San Marcos officials for their failure to respond. Davis was running for congress, and the group was scheduled to make three campaign stops later canceled due to the incident.

The LaSalle County Coroner's Office has officially declared that 25-year-old Illinois State University college student Jelani Day died as a result of drowning in the Illinois River where his remains were found on September 4.

The report gives the example of one border patrol agent, who had a history of multiple infractions, posting a picture of a parent and child who drowned and calling them "floaters." The agent was allowed to retire with disability benefits instead of facing any form of discipline.

"We have had a number of issues with effective returns in criminal trials for reasons ranging from ingrained problems in our legal system that have to do with long histories of white supremacy, to all kinds of procedural problems that have derailed justice in one way or another," University of Chicago historian Kathleen Belew said in an interview with NPR. "Civil trials are a really good tool in hitting the pocketbooks and the membership lists of white power groups."
