Derik Queen lifted the Maryland Terrapins into the Sweet 16 with a dramatic buzzer-beater against Colorado State on Sunday night. The Baltimore native, who has been a standout all season, delivered when it mattered most, cementing his place in March Madness history.

With Maryland trailing 71-70 and just under four seconds left, Queen took the inbound pass and immediately went to work. Despite facing tough defense from Colorado State, the ball dropped just as the buzzer sounded, sending the crowd into a frenzy and securing Maryland’s spot in the Sweet 16.

The Terps’ bench erupted, and Queen was at the heart of the celebration, soaking in the moment. He finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds, and one assist, but it was his clutch shot that will be replayed for years to come.

Colorado State held a seven-point lead at halftime. They had already overcome adversity in their first-round win against Memphis and knew Maryland would come out swinging.

Queen led Maryland in scoring, but he wasn’t alone in the effort. Rodney Rice contributed 16 points, while Julian Reese, the younger brother of WNBA star Angel Reese, added 15. Every starter finished with double digits, a testament to the team’s balanced attack.

For Colorado State, Nique Clifford led the way with 21 points, though he struggled from the field, shooting 7-of-17. Despite their efforts, the Rams couldn’t deny Maryland’s determination and the sheer brilliance of Queen’s last-second heroics.

Hailing from Baltimore, Queen has always played with a toughness and confidence that reflect his roots. Sunday night, on one of the biggest stages in college basketball, he showed the world what Baltimore ballers are made of.
