Jerome Isaac Hurley, a 44-year-old pastor of Miracle Temple Church in Anne Arundel County, has been sentenced to five years of supervised probation after stealing $347,000 from his church.

Hurley served as pastor at Miracle Temple from 2017 until October 2022. In 2020, a fire broke out at the church parsonage. Following the incident, Hurley filed an insurance claim on behalf of the church. On March 20, 2021, the insurance company issued a payment of $350,000 to the church, WMAR reports.

Just eleven days later, on March 31, Hurley took $347,000 of that money and deposited it into his personal account, using the funds for personal expenses.

When filing his 2021 income tax return, Hurley did not report the $347,000, resulting in unpaid taxes totaling $33,595.05 to the State of Maryland.

Earlier this year, Hurley pleaded guilty to theft in a separate case related to the stolen church funds. That case was prosecuted by the State’s Attorney’s Office for Anne Arundel County.
