Baltimore Orioles Minor League Player Luis Guevara Dies in Florida Jet Ski Accident

Luis Guevara, a 19-year-old minor league prospect with the Baltimore Orioles, has died following a jet ski collision in Sarasota, Florida, the team confirmed on Tuesday.
The tragic accident occurred Sunday evening, June 15, near Lido Key. According to Major League Baseball, Guevara was involved in a head-on collision between two personal watercraft around 8 p.m. All four individuals riding the two jet skis were thrown into the water. Two were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In a statement, Orioles Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias expressed the organization’s deep sorrow:
“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates, and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time.”
In response to the incident, the team postponed its minor league game on Monday, June 16, citing the involvement of players in a jet ski accident. The organization did not initially release names.
Guevara, a native of Tinaco, Venezuela, signed with the Orioles as an international free agent in 2023. He spent his first two professional seasons (2023–2024) with the Dominican Summer League Orioles before making his U.S. debut in 2025.
This season, Guevara appeared in 30 games across three levels: 24 games with the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds, four with the FCL Orioles, and two with the Double-A Chesapeake Baybirds. Known as a switch-hitting leadoff talent, Guevara was praised for his strong bat-to-ball skills and consistent swing from both sides of the plate.
He had been regarded as one of the top Venezuelan hitters in his signing class.
The Orioles and broader baseball community are mourning the loss of a promising young talent whose career had only just begun.
