Trash collection in Baltimore could face delays or interruptions this week as the city’s Department of Public Works (DPW) prioritizes employee safety amid soaring temperatures.

Baltimore has also declared a Code Red extreme heat alert in effect through Thursday, June 26.

DPW has renewed its commitment to following the Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) guidelines for preventing heat-related illnesses, a move prompted by the tragic death of Ronald Silver II in August 2024.

Heat-Illness Prevention Measures in Place

DPW officials warn that trash and recycling services may be altered or temporarily suspended during the heat wave. As of Tuesday, collection is ongoing but crews may need extra time to finish their routes.

According to DPW’s heat safety protocol, when the heat index reaches between 90 and 99 degrees, workers must take a 10-minute break every two hours. If the heat index hits 100 degrees or higher, breaks increase to 15 minutes every hour.

In extreme conditions, crews have the authority to stop work early or pause trash pickup if safety becomes a concern.

Residents are encouraged to report any missed pickups by calling 311 and to keep their trash and recycling bins out until collection resumes.
