Teen Vogue is breaking barriers. The publication has hired its first Black editor-in-chief. On Thursday, Teen Vogue announced that Elaine Welteroth has been appointed editor-in-chief. The role was formerly held by Amy Astley. “Elaine, Marie and Phil are fearlessly at the forefront, inspiring young trendsetters with their sophisticated take on emerging fashion, beauty and pop culture, and they will lead Teen Vogue to the next phase of its success,” said Anna Wintour, Condé Nast Artistic Director and Editor-in-Chief of Vogue magazine, in a statement. “This team has thoroughly embraced the endless potential of social media and new platforms, and their understanding of the most effective way to use them to connect with audiences, embodies what it means to be an editor today.” Welteroth is not only the first African-American woman to be at the helm of the publication, she is the youngest editor-in-chief in Condé Nast history at 29. Comedian Mike Epps Receives His High School Diploma
Comedian Mike Epps has proven that it’s never too late to go back to school. On Friday, Epps, who hails from Indianapolis, received his high school diploma. The comedian got involved in the entertainment industry at a very early age and put education on the back burner to pursue his career. He referred to his graduation as one of the best moments of his life. “This is so emotional to me because I didn’t get a chance to graduate like this. And now I’m 45 years old and just to be amongst you guys is such blessing,” said Epps as he spoke before the graduating class. “I’m so proud of you and I want you to continue to keep pushing on and go to college and get as many degrees as you can. My beautiful mama that’s sitting in the audience she told me when I was young, she said, “Mike, one day you’re gonna wish you would’ve gotten your education.” His mother, daughter Bria, and his granddaughter all attended the graduation. Epps took to Instagram to post a photo with his mother after the ceremony with the caption, “My mom said today one of her dreams came true. Finally got my high school diploma. New Docu-Series Will Follow Gabby Douglas’ Journey to the Olympics
A new docu-series will follow the journey of Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas as she strives to win the gold medal again at the 2016 Rio Olympics, an accomplishment that will put her in the history books. The series, titled Douglas Family Gold, will show her mother, Natalie Hawkins, and three siblings as they support her while she prepares for Rio. “[My mom] told me that it’s the times that I have fallen and gotten back up that are the moments that inspire her the most,” said Douglas during an interview. “She always tells me that no matter what the outcome is, I am a champion in her eyes.” She also shared that her family has sacrificed a lot for her to pursue her career. “They have sacrificed so much for my career. They encourage me, give me great advice and make me laugh!,” she said. “When I fall, it’s my family that picks me up.” Douglas Family Gold is slated to premiere on May 25 at 10 p.m. ET on Oxygen. Prince May Have Been Dead for Hours Before He was Found
According to a paramedic on the scene, the legendary singer may have been dead for hours before his body was found at his Paisley Park compound. A physician had been reportedly treating Prince a few weeks before he passed away for withdrawal symptoms that stemmed from an opioid addiction. After having an opioid overdose in Moline on April 15, Prince reportedly dealt with withdrawal symptoms days after. Autopsy and toxicology investigations are still ongoing. Prince died on April 21.
