Maryland just made a serious move toward changing lives and communities — for good.

Governor Wes Moore announced a brand-new $10 million initiative called UPLIFT on Friday, aimed at increasing property values and boosting homeownership in neighborhoods that have historically been disinvested — starting right here in East Baltimore’s Orchard Ridge community.

Through UPLIFT, vacant lots and abandoned structures will be transformed into affordable homes. In fact, 27 homes are already in development through a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, and five first-time homebuyers are set to move in this fall.

“Today really is a legendary day for the state of Maryland,” Moore said during the announcement. “This is what community is all about. This is what legacy is all about. This is what investment is all about, and this is what creating generational wealth is all about.”

He’s absolutely right.

Let’s be honest…For decades, certain neighborhoods across Maryland have been ignored, neglected, and stripped of opportunity. Programs like UPLIFT aren’t just about new homes or shiny new construction. They’re about reversing the cycle. They’re about building generational wealth where it was once impossible to imagine. They’re about giving people pride in where they live and the chance to build a future, not just for themselves, but for their families.

The Orchard Ridge neighborhood is the first to receive this kind of state-level support through UPLIFT, but hopefully, it won’t be the last.

As someone born and raised in this state, I believe programs like these are exactly what we need more of. They offer real hope, real opportunity, and real ownership, literally and figuratively. If we want to see Maryland grow stronger, safer, and more united, it starts with investments like this.

This is how you rebuild trust in the system. By investing in the people who’ve been left out for far too long.
