An autopsy of Darius Robinson, an inmate at Caddo County Jail in Oklahoma, ruled Robinson’s death a homicide, KSWO reports.
The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s report listed the probable cause of death as asphyxiation due to “manual compression of the neck,” according to The Frontier. It also states Robinson suffered a broken neck, several hemorrhages, and abrasions from his handcuffs.
Robinson, 41, was arrested on April 1 for unpaid child support claims, KSWO reports.
He died on April 5 after a violent confrontation with correctional officers. According to Robinson’s autopsy, jailers subdued him after he tried to escape while they were clearing items he destroyed in his cell.
“When the jail staff opened his cell door to check on him, the decedent reportedly charged the staff. He was subdued, handcuffed, and pepper spray was reportedly used. In addition, it was reported that a neck hold was also used to restrain the deceased. While lying handcuffed and prone on the jail floor, the deceased became unresponsive. There was a report of white foam coming from his mouth.”
Robinson was rushed to a hospital in neighboring Anadarko, where he was pronounced dead.
According to The Daily Beast, Robinson’s brother Ansio has plans to sue the Caddo County Sheriff’s Office. Robinson’s family wants proof to corroborate the officers’ accounts through the release of the surveillance tape.
Robinson’s family released a statement through their lawyer:
“Tragically, the autopsy confirms what the family suspected; Darius Robinson died as the result of excessive force. Specifically, the medical examiner concluded that Darius died from injuries consistent with manual strangulation. Darius’ injuries were directly caused by jailers at the Caddo County Jail.”
District Attorney Jason Hicks says he is waiting for the results of an investigative report before he proceeds. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has allegedly launched a probe into Robinson’s death.
