US-CRIME-POLICE-SHOOTING

Three officers have been killed and as many as seven are critically wounded in Baton Rouge this morning, according to several media outlets on the ground in the area covering the Alton Sterling shooting and the resulting protests.

Witnesses say a man wearing black with his face covered opened fire on police officers in Baton Rouge on Sunday, injuring at least seven — including three who were pronounced dead.

Police received a call about a “suspicious person walking down Airline Highway with an assault rifle,” a source close to the investigation told CNN. When police arrived, the man opened fire. Two hospitals in Baton Rouge where the wounded officers were transported are on lockdown with police guarding the facilities.

Since the shooting death of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge police earlier this month, the department has been on high alert over what they’ve deemed “credible” threats against officers. Attorney General Eric Holder stated, “There is still an active scene. Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything.” The identity and whereabouts of the gunman has yet to be confirmed.

More details to come as the story develops.
