The National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the national report card, tests what students know and how they are doing in certain subjects, including reading and math.

The test is given to a sample of students in the fourth and eighth grades, and this years numbers showed very little increase from 2017 in Baltimore City and the state of Maryland. Only 11 percent of eighth-graders are considered proficient in math and only about 14 percent of fourth- and eighth-graders are considered proficient in reading in Baltimore City.

Officials with the Baltimore Teachers Union called the numbers troubling, adding, “However, as educators, we are all aware that test scores do not reflect the full picture of a child’s academic progress, nor do they take into account the circumstances that may preclude a child from scoring well.”

Either way, this is sad. We have to do better by our children in providing them a quality education, no matter what.
