The city of Baltimore was rocked this past weekend at the murder of Harford County resident Jacqueline Smith, 54, who was fatally stabbed at 12:30am Saturday after giving money to a woman who she thought was in need. This selfless act cost her her life, and additionally has brought the spotlight to the homeless problem that exists not just in Baltimore, but in many cities across this country.

This week, those in the homeless community have said that they definitely notice a difference in people’s willingness to give since Smith’s murder.

The senseless murder has garnered national attention. Oprah Winfrey, who got her start in Baltimore, tweeted saying that “this story struck my heart. I’ve done this a 1k times. But will think twice before ever doing again. To J.S. family I hope her death gets people ‘woke’ to change.”

Many say that while what happened last week was a horrible tragedy, it really has nothing to do with homelessness and public begging.

Still, people are being evermore cautious and it is sure to continue to have a trickle down effect to those who really stand in need.
